I recently had the privilege to attend one of Spun’s Face Lollipop Masterclasses, in which I got to make my own face out of sugar! A brilliantly unusual thing to do in London. I’ve previously attended their lollipop making masterclass, and that was a whole lot of fun, and at their birthday party I got to make a small candy rose, so I’ve had a little bit of experience already and was absolutely looking forward to try to replicate my own face as a big lollipop!
To start off with, we had another short introduction on how to work with sugar and what safety precautions needed to be taking as the melty goodness is of course quite hot when heated to working temperature. If you’ve never worked with boiled sugar before, this introduction is really fascinating and informative.
Next, the sugar gets coloured with mostly natural, vegan colours, and flavoured as well! We get the ever popular tutti frutti flavour, which smells just as amazing as it tastes. Once all the flavouring and colouring is done and the sugar has cooled to a workable temperature, we get a quick introduction on how to shape and work our faces, then we are handed our own blobs of tinted sugar and get to work on our likenesses.
Each of the masterclass attendees of the masterclass gets close and personal help from one of the sugar masters at Spun, so it’s fairly easy to get something somewhat resembling a face together. As someone who has experience in sculpting with clay, I really tried to use my knowledge and skills to craft something that looks recognizable like a face. But sugar is quite temperamental and not easy to work with at all. Through close supervision and lots of hands-on help from the team, I did end up with a face lollipop that resembles me at least slightly. Possibly only due to the hair and glasses, but I’m very happy with the result!
Okay, it’s a very wonky face with caterpillar-eyebrows, but it’s super shiny and I made it myself!
The Spun masterclasses truly are a unique experience as a whole lot of fun. And you get to take home a sweet treat, which is always welcome of course. So, if you’re looking for a fun afternoon or just something different to surprise your children or friends with, book a Spun masterclass and join in on the fun! I’m rating the masterclass five out of six rainbow sloths.
